In 1964 Robert Whitaker had a chance encounter with The Beatles and manager Brian Epstein on their first Australian tour. He was there to photograph an interview with them, and when Brian Epstein saw the pictures he liked them so much, he contacted Whitaker and asked him to be the staff photographer for NEMS, photographing all the artists. But it was with The Beatles that he developed a strong friendship with, allowing him to take some of the more relaxed and personal pictures. One of his first assignments was photographing The Beatles during their triumphant second American tour, including the historic Shea Stadium concert in New York. He spent the next two years traveling with the Beatles and shooting them at work, at rest and at play, on their tours, at home, in the recording studio, during private moments, and in formal photo-sessions.
